Meeting Great-Grandpa Davis

Today Isabel visited her Great Grandpa Davis at home. He hadn't seen her since the hospital and he was very surprised by how much she had already changed. She was very calm and sleepy during her visit. I think Grandpa loved having her over!
BTW- The purple outfit was a gift from Grandma Kathy. We are excited that she is finally starting to wear her "newborn" size clothes!

Week 3- Doctor Visit

Yesterday we went to the doctor for a 3 week check-up. Dr. Mueller wanted to make sure Isabel was gaining weight because she got off to such a slow start. When we left the hospital she was only 5 pounds 13 ounces. However, we are happy to report that she is now weighing in at 7 pounds 9 ounces. Yeah Bell! We are proud of her. (We had to laugh though considering most babies weigh that much when they leave the hospital the first day. )
We also wanted to talk to the doctor about Isabel's reflux. She is spitting up an awful lot and appears very gassy and uncomfortable after her feedings. Unfortunately, our doctor didn't help much other than to say that since she is gaining weight and appears healthy not to be too concerned. She will outgrow it. We need to be mindful of her positioning and I am monitoring what I eat but for now that is all we can do.

Jason had a work meeting and couldn't come to the doctor but luckily my mom got off work early and was able to come with me. We had to wait a long time for our appointment but Isabel was very patient. (She did have an "accident" on the nurse though :)

Isabel Goes for a Ride... (piece of cake)

Today I attempted to run some errands by myself (with Isabel). Wow! We only planned to go to the post office and dry cleaner right here in town. After two wardrobe changes, (she had an accident in the first outfit that took me ten minutes to put on her because she is so wiggly and floppy-headed) I packed my purse, the diaper bag, her carrier, the shirts for dry cleaning and the letters to mail and made my way out to the car. Now, you would think the rest would be easy. However, I still haven't gotten the hang of getting her seat locked into the car base so I stood outside and fiddled with it for five minutes. In the meantime I dropped the letters and clothes and had to chase them down. This took several minutes to get us in the car and ready to go. I really hope the neighbors were not watching (especially since I realized I forgot to put on my own socks before we left because I was focused on keeping Isabel's on her feet)
I dragged her carrier into the cleaners with me and luckily this time it was easier to get her "clicked" back into the car base. (BTW the lady at the cleaners thought she was adorable and I had to agree) We finally made it home but I must say that running errands is more challenging than it used to be! I'm sure we will get used to it-

Mommy and Isabel Visit Wredling

This Friday we took Isabel to Wredling Middle School to visit the coworkers on my team. Grandma and I bundled her up in her bear suit (way too big- but cute nonetheless) and she slept through most the visit. Isabel is definitely sleepiest during the morning/afternoon hours. Unfortunately, she gets VERY fussy and cranky late afternoon and evening. In fact, we are worried we may have a colicky baby on our hands as she has taken to screaming non-stop from 3 to 8pm for the last few days. Nothing seems to soothe her. Poor thing. Poor mommy and daddy.. they are exhausted!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Isabel celebrated her first holiday this week. On Tuesday we went to my parents house for corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes. (I had to skip the green beer because I am breast feeding- boo) Poor Jason, he has been SO sick all week. He had a temperature that night and his doctor recommended he not hold the baby because he may be contagious. We were very stressed and tired but luckily Grandma and Grandpa offered to let Isabel and I stay over so we (Jason and I) could get some much needed rest. Isabel slept in her Pack N' Play and hung out with Winnie my parent's Great Dane. Winnie was very protective and went to check on Isabel every time she made a sound during the night. What would we do without our friends and family's support?

Gaining Weight...

Isabel went back to the doctor this week and she was 6 pounds 4 oz. That means she had put back on almost all of the weight she had lost. That made her mom feel a lot better and more comfortable about breastfeeding. We are still working at it- our goal is to fatten her up! We'll go back for another weight check next week.

Family Visits

Isabel got to spend time with her family this week. Her Grandma Kathy (my mom) took two weeks off work to help me during the days while Jason is gone. She has been awesome. (Making us dinner, helping with laundry, changing diapers etc.... Makes me wonder - can mom move in permanently? Doubt my dad would go for that) Here is a picture of Isabel in a preemie outfit her grandma bought her.On Monday night Grandma and Grandpa Leppin drove all the way from Dwight to visit Isabel and have dinner with us. She was happy to see them (even though she slept 90% of their visit)
We can't wait for her to get older so that we can bring her to Dwight to visit her Arkansas family and the members of the church.

Aunt Mandy and Uncle Zach stop by all the time because they live so close by. Mandy can't get enough of Isabel. She wants to "eat her up". Again, Isabel seems to sleep whenever she has visitors. The second they leave, however, the party starts!

Let's Go Illinois!

Daddy loves to watch college basketball and it has been an Illini weekend. Little Belle likes to watch with her dad but sometimes she has to wear "earmuffs" when his team is not doing well because he uses colorful language.

Happy One Week Birthday!

Wow! Isabel is already one week old. Yesterday was her actual due date. Jason and I are loving every minute of getting to know our little angel. We have already learned so much. We can swaddle, change diapers, and breastfeed (well I am working on that one) In fact, we are no longer afraid that her head will fall off or that we will drop her if we don't clutch her tightly with both hands. Now- if we could just figure out how to get some sleep we would really be cooking.
What a pretty girl. She doesn't seem to like taking her picture much though. She always makes a sour face or closes her eyes. In this pic it looks as if she is examing her nails.
We call this look- "grumpy old man". Jason thinks she looks like she is trying to use mind control on us. Something like " ha ha sleep...you will never sleep again..."
It looks like she is screaming here but she is actually just yawning. Isabel is a major sleeper... and yawner. She also has a mad case of the hiccups. She has hiccuping spells several times a day. I am not surprised though since she had these daily in the womb.

Welcome Home Isabel- Meet Lucky!

Lucky was introduced to Isabel the day after we came home. He was extremely curious about her. He watched her every move. He seemed to like her but thought she was a giant toy when she began to move or make noise.
Isabel, on the other hand, didn't seem impressed with Lucky. She scrunched up her face whenever he got close and otherwise ignored his hovering.

Isabel's First Days...

Because of my c-section, we got an extended stay at the hospital (Thursday- Sunday). It was actually kind of nice at first because we got "baby training" from the nurses, room service, and help with the baby when we wanted to get some sleep. However, it didn't take long for us to get a bit stir-crazy and want to come home. Unfortunately, Isabel slept the entire first day she was born- and hardly ate at all. She ended up losing more weight than the doctors wanted and was stubbornly resisting breast feeding. They also suspected she was jaundice and needed to poke her poor little feet and keep an eye on her more closely.
By day two she was a bit more active, but didn't get the hang of eating until the third day. In fact, she still enjoys sleeping more than anything else. Of course, this excessive sleeping only occurs during the day. At night she comes alive and is ready to party. Jason and I are desperately hoping that will change soon. By Sunday we were excited to bring our little one home. Both Mom and baby were feeling much better.

Happy Birthday Isabel Grace Leppin!

She's finally here! On Thursday, March 5th at 11:59 am Isabel Grace Leppin was born via c-section. She was 6 pounds and 6 ounces- 20 inches long. The doctors commented she has long, skinny legs, thin arms and big feet. She is tall and lean, our little "model" (definitely not genes from her momma!)

The surgery went off without a hitch. We were pretty nervous beforehand but my parents, sister, Grandpa Davis, Bill, Marsha, and Aaron were all there to help us through it. It is pretty amazing because once they got me prepped and gave me the drugs, little Isabel was born in a matter of minutes. Of course she was still breech and her head was very high up in my abdomen. LOTS of pulling and tugging were needed to get her out. I think she was warm and comfy and not ready to be born just yet. Hearing her first cries was the most amazing thing- I heard her before I could even see her. Very emotional..... I cried tears of joy and relief.
Jason got to go over to the area where they weigh her and check her vitals. She was very slippery and messy. He was not a fan of cutting the cord. (I don't blame him!) Jason was amazed and a little shell-shocked. He told me that he was focusing on Isabel and trying his hardest not to see what was going on beyond the big, blue curtain. He thought watching them put my insides back together might make him a bit woozy. (Again,.. I don't blame him!) You never saw such a proud daddy though.

Then it was back to the room to recover and finally get to hold and meet my little girl. That entire afternoon is a bit of a blur. (Possibly from the drugs) but more likely because of the euphoria and joy we were feeling. Jason and I are so lucky and blessed. We prayed during the entire pregnancy for a healthy, safe delivery and the Lord granted it. Let the adventure begin!

Here We Go....

It's finally here! The night before we meet little Isabel Grace Leppin. My c-section is scheduled for 11:30 tomorrow afternoon. I have lots of mixed emotions. I am excited, scared, and sentimental! I can't believe my pregnancy is over and "mommyhood" is about to begin. I think we're up to the challenge. Tonight Jason and I are just trying to relax together and tie up any loose ends. (Poor Lucky he doesn't know what is about to hit him!)

Please say prayers for a safe delivery and we will pass on the details as soon as possible!
